While helping visions come alive and edifying talented students, Southern University’s Fine Arts Department cultivates their students for success.
Terrell Evans, a sophomore fine arts major from Baton Rouge, was chosen out of 153 students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities, to be a semi-finalist in the 2003 Verizon HBCU Art Competition.
The competition attempts to foster the artistic gifts of African-American students and their passion and pride for their culture.
This year was the first year that Southern participated in the competition, held on October 24, in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Nineteen students from colleges and universities such as, Hampton, Lincoln, Norfolk State, Texas Southern and Fayetteville State were chosen to be semi-finalists in the competition.
” This was my first competition and I know it will open doors for me, because my name is out there. I was excited that I made it to the semi-finals, so I could represent my school and the fine arts department,” Davis said.
Slightly disappointed in the outcome of the competition, Davis is sure that this will not be his last international art competition.
“Next year, I am going all the way. I’m going to try my best to win. I actually didn’t know I could produce this type of realistic drawing,” Davis said.
For being a semi-finalist, his work titled ” Progression of Time,” is on display in New York’s Kenkeleba House.
With a desire to own his own art studio, teach art and obtain a master’s degree in fine arts studies, he knows that the professors in the art department have helped him greatly.
“Two of my instructors gave me advice and instructions on how to research ideas. I took their advice and I was successful,” Davis said.
