A man accused of shooting a Marine recruiting sergeant and the alleged getaway driver have been arrested in Alabama, Baton Rouge police said.
Jordan Lee Hughes, 21, and Jonathan P. Smith, 22, were arrested Saturday after Baton Rouge asked police to check a relative’s house in Mobile, Cpl. Mary Ann Godawa said.
Hughes is accused of shooting Master Sgt. Kenneth Johnson, 37, or Harvey, in a gas station parking lot Nov. 8.
He and Smith allegedly accused Johnson and his brother, who was not hurt, of driving in front of them and cutting them off.
Johnson, who was visiting family in Baton Rouge, was shot in the chest with a semiautomatic handgun.
Services for Johnson were held Friday in Baker and Saturday in New Orleans.
Smith and Hughes, who shared his house, are expected to be returned to Baton Rouge early in the week, Godawa said.
She said Hughes will be booked with second-degree murder and Smith as an accessory after the fact.
Longtime neighbor, Lucille Phagans, said she has known Smith and his family for more than 20 years and was shocked by his arrest.
“He’s always been a quiet, respectable man growing up,” she said. “I still don’t really believe it.”
Phagans said Smith had talked recently about pursuing a degree in forensic science. She said she does not know Hughes.
