DALLAS – The award winning Southern DIGEST has done it again. The Black College Communication Association presented the DIGEST with seven out of 16 Excellence in Journalism Awards at the 2003 BCCA Awards in Dallas.
“I am very proud of The Southern DIGEST and how they represent themselves. They are setting a standard for HBCUs and other colleges in the nation,” said Derick S. Hackett, director of the Office of Student Media Services.
The DIGEST members excelled in individual and overall categories.
The DIGEST won Best Newspaper-Weekly, Best Graphics, and runner-up for Best News Coverage. “Everybody on staff should be proud, because we won best overall newspaper, so everyone was a winner,” said Chrisola Webb, photographer for The Jaguar Yearbook.
Four staff members proved themselves as outstanding journalists and were recognized individually by BCCA.
Editor in chief Gabrielle Maple won Best News Story. Best Individual Graphic was awarded to photo and graphics editor Ryan Knight. Webb received an award for Best Individual Photo. The DIGEST competed against 11 other HBCU newspapers.
