Conference
7th Annual DoE EPSCoR & LS-LAMP Student Research Conference will be held November 23 at the Sheraton Hotel in New Orleans. An important component of the conference is the student oral and poster scientific competitions. These competitions will display the research and presentation skills of minority, undergraduate scholars in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Top presenters will receive awards. LS-Lamp is current accepting abstracts for student oral and poster presentations. Registration is avaible at www.ls-lamp.org. RESEARCH CONFERENCE
The 5th Annual Social & Behavioral Sciences Undergraduate Research Conference will be held Friday, November 7 in the Cotillion Ballroom in Smith-Brown Memorial Union from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The purpose of the conference is to showcase oral presentations of empirical and theoretical research papers submitted by students in the social and behavioral sciences. This event is being sponsored by the Departments of Social Work and Sociology in collaboration with the Departments of Criminal Justice, Economics, History, Political Science, Rehabilitation and Disability Studies, Speech Pathology and Sociology. Writing Proficiency Retake Examination
The Writing Proficiency Retake Examination will be given on Thursday, November 6. Sign in begins at 3:15 p.m. To ensure that the test begins on time, there will be absolutely no admittance after 3:45 p.m. Students are to report as follows: A-Z – Stewart Hall Auditorium. Tutoring is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Mondays and Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Harris Hall Room 2024. Admission Applications for the
School of Nursing
The School of Nursing will be accepting for admission for the Spring 2004 semester. The deadline for submitting applications is November 1. All students must meet the criteria: (1) Have a grade point average of 2.6 or above (2) Submission of ACT/SAT scores (3) Completion of all courses listed in the first three semesters of the nursing curriculum plan with a minimum grade of “C.” For more information call 771-3266.
Early Registration for Spring 2004
Be advised that Early Registration for the Spring 2004 semester will be held from November 3 to November 19. The following is the breakdown according to priority: November 3-4: Law School and Graduate School, November 5-7: 60 earned hours and above (Juniors and Seniors), November 8-10: 59 earned hours and below (Sophomores and Freshmen) and November 11-19: Everyone. Note: November 11-19 students with problems may be seen in the Enrollment Office located in T.H. Harris hall. Be advised that a $30 failure to pre-register fee will be billed to those continuing students who fail to participate in early-registration.

First Annual Capital City Showdown
The Louisiana Leadership Institute will host the first ever Capital City Showdown Battle of the Bands and Drum Line Competition November 22 at 3 p.m. in A.W. Mumford Stadium. Tickets are $10 at the gate. The showdown will feature the Louisiana Leadership All Star Marching Band and St. Augustine, M.B. Smiley, Washington Marion, Carroll, Leflore, Central, McDonough 35 and Carver High Schools Marching Bands.

Scholarships Available for Gay and Lesbian Students
The New Orleans Chapter of PFLAG (Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) are offering 25 $1,000 scholarships available for the 2004-2005 school year. To be eligible, the student must (a) self identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered, (b) be 17 years or older as of April 15, 2004, (c) be a resident of Louisiana and (d) be planning to attend (or attending) a post-secondary educational institution. The application and required supporting materials must be postmarked by February 10, 2004 and recipients must be present at the awards event in May 2004 to accept the scholarship in person.
