NEW ORLEANS – The power is up and the rails are ready, but the new streetcar line on Canal Street won’t open until landscaping and street work are finished in the spring, officials say.
The Regional Transit Authority scrapped a Dec. 6 ceremony for the 3.1-mile route because Canal Street is still being resurfaced, sidewalks being repaired, and landscaping in the wide median is incomplete
The $161 million project’s new target date is sometime in March.
“The system works now,” RTA Chairman James Reiss said Monday. “But the overall project is not finished to either my or management’s satisfaction. When we do officially open, we want this entire system and its surroundings to look like a polished gem.”
The old Canal Street streetcar line was canceled and tracks ripped out in May 1964. Work to replace it began in January 2001.
