Conference
7th Annual DoE EPSCoR & LS-LAMP Student Research Conference will be held November 23 at the Sheraton Hotel in New Orleans. An important component of the conference is the student oral and poster scientific competitions. These competitions will display the research and presentation skills of minority, undergraduate scholars in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Top presenters will receive awards. LS-Lamp is current accepting abstracts for student oral and poster presentations. Registration is avaible at www.ls-lamp.org. First Annual Capital City Showdown
The Louisiana Leadership Institute will host the first ever Capital City Showdown Battle of the Bands and Drum Line Competition November 22 at 3 p.m. in A.W. Mumford Stadium. Tickets are $10 at the gate. The showdown will feature the Louisiana Leadership All Star Marching Band and St. Augustine, M.B. Smiley, Washington Marion, Carroll, Leflore, Central, McDonough 35 and Carver High Schools Marching Bands.

Project SOAR (Saving Our #1 American Resource-Children), a nonprofit child abuse prevention program will sponsor its annual “Take Pictures with Black Santa” on Saturday, November 22 and Sunday, November 23 at The Flea Market located at 5905 Florida Blvd. from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. For more information call 774-7526.
Scholarships Available for Gay and Lesbian Students
The New Orleans Chapter of PFLAG (Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) are offering 25 $1,000 scholarships available for the 2004-2005 school year. To be eligible, the student must (a) self identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered, (b) be 17 years or older as of April 15, 2004, (c) be a resident of Louisiana and (d) be planning to attend (or attending) a post-secondary educational institution. The application and required supporting materials must be postmarked by February 10, 2004 and recipients must be present at the awards event in May 2004 to accept the scholarship in person. Speech Pathology and Audiology Majors
The Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology has scholarships for full-time undergraduate Speech Pathology and Audiology majors pursing a Bachelor of Science degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology at SU. Qualified candidates will receive a stipend of $3,300 per academic year, a $100 per semester textbook stipend and tuition costs. To qualify, candidates must meet the minimum criteria: full time Speech Audiology major, accepted into the College of Sciences, current junior or senior at SU, membership of a culturally or linguistically diverse group and a cumulative grade point average of 2.8. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is currently accepting applications for the Southern University Institute for Transportation Studies (SUITS) Fellowship for the Spring 2004 Semester. Eligibility requirements: Must be enrolled in the civil and environmental engineeering program; must be in a transportation related discipline; should be planning to enter the transportation profession after completing their higher level education; must be a freshmen, sophomore or junior but will not complete junior year of college before being awarded a SUITS fellowship. The maximum stipend and tuition is $2,500. Thanksgiving Banquet
The Southern University Foundation Campus Ministry will host its first ever Thanksgiving Banquet on November 22 at 6 p.m. Chancellor Edward Jackson will be the evening’s guest speaker. All students, faculty and the public are cordially invited.
Second Annual Holiday Bake & Craft Sale
Celebrate the spirit of giving at the Second Annual Holiday Bake and Craft Sale sponsored by the SU School of Nursing. The event will be held Friday, November 21 from noon to 4 p.m. in the SU School of Nursing Lobby. Proceed to benefit the women and children of the Capitol Area Battered Women’s Program.
Play Opens
The theatre department at SU will present The Business of Murder, a two act play, November 18-22. Performances will be in the Fine Arts Theatre with a 7:30 p.m. curatin each day. Admission charges are $5.00 for adults, $1.00 for students and Seniors. Tickets will be available in the box office in the Fine Arts Lobby from 6 p.m. till curtain time each evening of the performance. The public is invited. The is an “adult” play NOT recommended for children under age 15. Children under age 15 will NOT be admitted. The age restriction is departmental policy not a matter of individual option. Lighting of the
Christmas Tree in Jaguarland Ceremony
The Department of Residential Housing will host its annual “Lighting of the Christmas Tree in Jaguarland” Ceremony Wednesday, December 3 at 5 p.m. in front of Shade and Totty Halls. Special guests will be pre-kindergarten classes from SU Lab, SU Head Start Center and Ryan Elementary. Santa, Mrs. Claus and Lacumba will be there to greet the children. Come out and give Santa your wish list and sing carols in the spirit of Christmas. Refreshments will be served.
Empty injket cartridge collection
The SU Lab Library is collecting empty inkjet cartidges, laser cartridges and used cell phones for recycling to earn free equipment and cash. Items can be dropped off in the SU Lab Library Building 129 Swan Room 147.
