SU hosts Fall Family Open House
Southern University faculty, staff, students and administrators welcomed high school juniors, seniors and their families this weekend to one of the most attractive campuses in the South.
Students were able to obtain information from the office of financial aid, office of admissions, residential housing and many colleges throughout the university. Visitors toured the campus, enjoyed a tailgate party and received a complimentary ticket to the football game. For many students, this was not their first visit to Southern. Many even said that they discovered something new about SU that they didn’t know before.
“I learned a lot about Southern,” said Angela Gammage, a senior at Leesville High School in Leesville. “I am excited about the honors program and I am even looking forward to one day becoming Miss Southern University.”
While some students were amazed by the variety of programs and scholarships available, Kevin Johnson, a senior at Lewisville High School in Dallas, was amazed by the support of the Jaguar Nation.
“I am definitely interested in playing sports and I like the feel of family that the fans show here,” Johnson said.
Chancellor Edward R. Jackson shared his plans for the construction of four new dormitories and new buildings for the colleges of science and business. He also stressed the importance of academic success.
“Every year we receive 1,300 to 1,500 freshmen, but by the end of their first year about 30 percent of those freshmen are gone,” Jackson said.
Jackson cautioned freshmen that are considering SU to “come prepared to do the work.”
