On February 14, the stores are stocked with various Valentine’s Day paraphernalia from teddy bears to teddies. The candy-coated holiday celebrating cupid and his deeds is here, but this year the rules have changed.
Valentine’s Day, a day traditionally for lovers, is no longer for couples. Singles all over the nation have decided that it is OK to be “alone.”
Thursday, “Spoken Sultry Seduction,” a Simple But Dope Production, advertised a special $1 dollar admission for all single ladies who arrived before 10 p.m. at Churchill’s Premium Cigars and Elixirs on Jefferson Highway.
“I am not going to buy into the hype of Valentines Day, I am going to go out and enjoy myself, by myself cause I can,” said Fredrick Millican 20-year-old history major from Baton Rouge.
Start your own traditions this holiday by exchanging gifts with friends. Treat someone to a special night or simply send yourself a gift.
Louis Sassau, a visiting student from Texas Southern University said he wasn’t spending the night alone.
“This is my first year being single and I am going to chill with my family, cause that’s love. I am probably going to take them to dinner and treat them to a movie” said the music major from Opelousas.
Dozens of newspapers and online magazines are targeting articles towards single women as well as men.
Justin Becker from AskMen.com gave guys several suggestions for making this lover’s holiday a memorable one, including a single’s party, inviting all your single friends or those friends whose dates are unavailable. Becker also adds not turning down any invitations for Valentine’s Day activities. The U.S. Census Bureau estimated more than 80 million people are spending this Valentine’s Day single. Don’t depend on a date to make your day.
If going out is not on your agenda and you’re not in the mood to party, settle for a night alone at home and pamper yourself.
“Usually I stay home and watch a movie and relax,” said Jami Jackson, a sophomore vocal performance major from Baton Rouge.
Ladies, make a run to your nearest Wal-Mart and raid the cosmetics section. Hit Blockbuster for a few romantic comedies or simply treat yourself to something you wouldn’t normally eat. Ice cream and pizza can make for a great way to enjoy you.
Guys, simply grab your favorite meal, kick back and enjoy lounging around at home.
Singles make this day yours by doing the things that you want.
