February 14…a time for the flower of passion to come to full bloom. On Valentine’s Day, many can go broke purchasing balloons, flowers, candy, jewelry and expensive nights out on the town.
Is it necessary to go broke trying to express a gift that is free? Southern University is filled with numerous hideaways that are not expensive and still romantic.
“Valentine’s Day is ludicrous. You should not have to express yourself through currency. Money is the root of all evil. Love is God’s gift to the world, so how can you coincide the evil of the world with one of God’s most precious gifts?” said Joshua Craig, a junior political science major from New Orleans.
For Valentine’s Day, the vendors in the Union are working full-time.
“The prices are cheaper in the Union as opposed to other stores,” said Dominique Jackson, a criminal justice major.
The union is commonly used by students to eat. Why not get a meal and sit outside to enjoy Lake Kernan and observe the beauty of nature at its best?
Tim Blakes, a junior mass communications major from New Orleans said, “It is always needed in the chaotic college atmosphere to find a secluded place for you and a special person to chill.”
To have a lunch date on the bluff is a great idea. At restaurants on Valentine’s Day people make reservations months in advance to get scenery like the one we receive free at Southern University.
Maybe you are into the Arts and plan to attend an art show. You can view fine works of art here at the Southern University’s Museum of Art. SUMA is open Tuesday-Friday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
“It is sweet, because you get a chance to learn something outside of the normal dating environments,” said Crystal Vidrine, a junior secondary education major from Ville Platte.
These are possible alternatives on campus that you can engage in to save money while dating.
“If you love someone you should want to make them feel special no matter what it is you do. Money is secondary,” said Aaron Butler, a junior majoring in mass communications from New Orleans.
Remember money can’t buy you love or happiness. It is the simple things that make a night or any holiday special…not the dollar amount.
