Robert Vowels, commissioner of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (pictured 2nd from left), is pictured at the Birmingham Civil Rights Museum to view an original copy of the Declaration of Independence. The display, which occurred for ten days in January, was made available as part of a special cross-country road trip by television producer Norman Lear (The Jeffersons, All in the Family). Lear paid $8 million for one of the 25 remaining original copies of the documents signed on July 4, 1776. Pictured from far left are: Birmingham Mayor Bernard Kincaid, Vowels, Birmingham Civil Rights Institute Executive Director Lawrence Pijeaux and AXA Financial, Inc. Executive Vice President Don L. Wilson.
