The Southern University Jaguars men and women’s tennis teams are looking to repeat last year’s dominance as Southwestern Athletic Conference champions, a title that earned them an NCAA regional playoff berth. This season, both teams are 0-4 after losing to Auburn this weekend and are hoping to make positive transitions for their future games
SU tennis head coach Jeffery Conyers is waiting for some key players to step up on both teams.
“For the men, I am looking for Alex Hidalgo to step up at the one spot, he had a chance to go three sets at Auburn…and David Ensignia to help at the three-four spot-he also had a good match at Auburn.” The nationally ranked Auburn Tigers defeated as the defeated the Jaguars 7-0.
The Lady Jaguars team is in a rebuilding year, having only two returning players from last year’s championship team.
“I am still looking for player to be a leader on the team. The women’s team is fairly new…the team is just trying to find their niche.”
The Lady Jaguars also suffered at the hands of the Auburn Lady Tigers (ranked 31 in the nation) 7-0.
Conyers is optimistic about his players increasing their level of competition.
The Lady Jaguars will return to action today against Sam Houston State and on Saturday against the University of Texas Pan-American. The men will play again February 19 against the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
