The Southern University men’s basketball team fell to 5-12 overall on the season with back-to-back losses to Alcorn State University and Centenary College.
The Braves of Alcorn State University ran the Jaguars off “The Reservation” defeating them 97-83.
The Jaguars, who lead by as many as 14 points, managed to self-destruct in the second half of the match-up.
“We simply fell apart,” said head basketball coach Ben Jobe. “That always seems to happen, we let them score too many points on the inside.”
Leading the Jags in the defeat was senior guard Victor Tarver with 22 points. Adding to the ineffective effort was sophomore center Jerrid Campbell with 20 points and sophomore guard Tim Johnson with 14 points.
Leading the Braves was forward Brian Jackson of Baker High School with 23 points.
Southern then returned home only to be charmed into submission by the Gentlemen of Centenary College.
“They ran all over us,” said Jobe. “It’s been a long time since I lost like that…since last season.”
When the Jaguars took on the Gents last season, they were defeated 99-69.
Sophomore forward Peter Cipriano led the Jaguars with 19 points and eleven rebounds. Johnson added 10 points. The Gents’ guard Andrew Wisniewski put up 32 points to lead Centenary.
The Jaguars will return to conference play on Saturday, February 8 against the Tigers of Grambling State in Seymour Gym at 7:30 p.m.
