The Southern University Lady Jaguars were defeated 10-1 by the No. 15th nationally ranked Crimson Tide of The University of Alabama, in the first -round of the NCAA Softball Regional held in Tuscaloosa, Ala. this afternoon.
The Southwestern Athletic Conference champion Jaguars, the No. 8 seed in regional will face Georgia Tech, the No. 5 seed, in the elimination game tonight at 7:30 p.m. Georgia Tech was defeated by Illinois 5-3 in the 9:30 a.m. game.
SU lefty freshman pitcher, Samisha Bledsoe (12-8), gave up 11 hits allowing Alabama to score two runs in the first inning, three in the second inning and five runs in the fourth inning. SU’s Robyn Lewis scored the Jags only run in the top of the fourth off of a throwing error. Lewis also finished the game with two stolen bases.
SU, now 19-15 on the season collected only four hits, struck out six times while both team committed three errors each. This is SU’s second appearance in the NCAA Tournament since beginning softball in 1997.
Catcher Lacy Perjean hit two homeruns and one triple led No. 1 seed and host Alabama, now 46-19 overall. Bledsoe collected two of the four Jaguar hits to aid her cause. Second baseman Stephanie Mulder and left fielder Cashara Edgerson collected the other Jaguar hits.
The game was shortened to five innings because of the Region VIII mercy rule.
If the Jaguars defeat Tech, they will play again on Friday, May 16 at 5:30 p.m., either against Umass, Southern Illinois, Stanford or Chattanooga.
