After 16 years of retaining the women’s golf conference championship, the Lady Tigers of Jackson State University were dethroned by the Southern University Women’s golf team by a one-stroke win on a playoff hole in last week’s Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship.
Junior Cassie Jemison pulled off the win on the playoff hole by catapulting the Jags to a ten-stroke win over JSU.
The tournament was held April 14-17 at Lake Windcrest Golf Club in Magnolia, Texas. SU led in scoring by 10 strokes on the first day of competition with a score of 306 and JSU trailed with a score of 316.
“We had outstanding play from Danielle Sells, Josephine Ainley and Nicole Joseph,” said, Willie Williams, SU men’s golf head coach.
On the second day of competition, the Jaguars women’s team tied the defending champs at the end of regulation play with a score of 611.
Ainley had a score of 75, Sells shot a 76, Joseph shot a 77 and sophomore Annie Tu shot a score of 77.
“Great play from the expected standouts and the entire team contributed to our championship,” said Williams.
The men’s team finished sixth overall in the tourney with 956 total points as they watched the Tigers of Jackson State take the championship with 903 total points on the 54 hole, 7,040 yard course at Lake Windcrest.
Athough Southern was sixth overall, senior Brian Njoroge came in second individually shooting a score of 75 and garnering 219 total points.
“Brian Njoroge played outstanding in the tourney and throughout the year. I am looking forward to seeing him on tour sometime in the future,” said Williams.
The Lady Jags will compete at the National Women Collegiate on April 24-27 in Atlanta. Both teams will then travel to Port. St. Lucie, Fla. and compete in the National Minority College Golf Scholarship Fund Tournament on May 1-4.
