Last Saturday, Southern University senior long jumper Brian Johnson continued what has seemed to be a tradition for SU track and field athletes-going the distance.
Johnson, who had the longest outdoor jump in the NCAA last year with a jump of 27.4 meters, made his mark on the collegiate track and field community again by winning the 2003 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship in the long jump division.
This year, the event was held at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville and Johnson “extended” his presence by jumping an impressive 27.2m.
“I expected to go and win even though I was not favored. I like being the underdog-it makes you work harder. I went there with a mission to win. We attend a Black university and we do not get the recognition, so I went and represented for me and my team,” said Johnson.
Johnson went into the NCAA Championships as the number two seed behind cross-town rival John Moffitt of Louisiana State University. Moffitt went on to place fifth.
