Leaving class early to make hair appointments at the salon is a thing of the past.
On March 10, the Southern University Beauty Salon re-opened showcasing stylist Mark Kaufman.
Kaufman, a certified hairstylist of Baton Rouge for 18 years is new to Southern University. However, Kaufman has been on the cutting edge of hair care at the Jagged Edge Hair Salon for years.
Kaufman specializes in not only styling hair, but also treating it with products such as Afage and New Era.
“Mark Kaufman has been called ‘The Man with Growing Hands’ by members of the salon and clients, because he helps your hair to grow. He manages my hair well and is very versatile and creative,” said Penny Goins, a customer of Kaufman’s for over 12 years.
Kaufman puts himself in a league of his own.
“I cater to my customers by being reliable, listening to them and giving them the style they want,” said Kaufman. “The biggest complaint customers have are that they are being told what to do by their stylists…I do what the customers want. I don’t get scissor happy; I have happy scissors.”
Among the new clientele attracted by this new set of scissors on campus is Malinda Smith, a senior political science major from Zachary.
“He demonstrates a great sense of professionalism. I am very pleased that there is a salon on campus conveniently located for students’ use. I will return again and again,” said Smith of her first visit with Kaufman.
Another reason Kaufman is popular among his clientele is because of his prices. Kaufman’s prices range from five dollars for a trim to 40 dollars for a relaxer.
“Discounts can be worked out,” said Kaufman. Other services offered are eyebrow arches, highlights, weaves and haircuts.
Other students are looking forward to experiencing the salon. Among them are students who reside on campus and may not have transportation.
Kim Atkins, a freshman from Mansfield majoring in psychology said, “The salon is an advantage for people who are from out of town and don’t know anything about the city.”
The beauty salon is open Monday through Wednesday from 8a.m to 5 p.m. For more information or to make an appointment call, 771-3691 or 2521843. Appointments are encouraged. However, walk-ins are welcome.
According to Gail Tousant, assistant director of the student union, there are five booths available in the beauty salon for beauticians to rent. Toussant said that she is looking forward to getting the beauty salon up and running to its full capacity. For more information, contact Toussant at 771-2608.
