BATON ROUGE, La. – The Southern University Jaguars women’s basketball team lead by the strong inside play of power forwards Tremesha Colbert and Ruth Buck ripped the Lady Bulldogs of Tougaloo College 75-37, on Tuesday night at Seymour Gym.
Colbert, a senior from Monticello, Ark., scored 22 points and 12 rebounds while Buck a Port Gibson, Miss., native scored 12 points and 14 rebounds along with six blocks.
The Jaguars opened the game on a 10-0 run on a layup by Tommie Walden and held Tougaloo scoreless for the first 6:09 of the game until finally scoring on a free throw by Lequisha Johnson.
The SU defense forced Tougaloo into 15 first half turnovers and had taken a 41-23 halftime lead.
Senior guard Cherise Sims collected eight rebounds and scored 12 of her 16 points in the second half as SU outscored Tougaloo 34-14 in the second half to win the game 75-37.
True freshman guard Roland Monroe added 11 points as she is now starting for the Jaguars. Walden added seven assists and three steals.
The Jaguars defense held Tougaloo to a 26.7 shooting percentage in the game and SU out-rebound the Bulldogs 54 to 41.
SU will host South Alabama on Saturday, December 21 at 3 p.m.
NOTE: Southern University, South Alabama and IUPUI (Indiana University- Purdue University Indianapolis) are the only three colleges or universities that has a Jaguar as its team mascot. IUPUI adopted the Jaguar name in 1997. Since the early 1970’s IUPUI was known as the Metros.
