Although registration for the Spring 2002 semester moved from the Felton G. Clark Activity Center to the Seymour Gymnasium, students who fail to follow procedure still experienced long lines and aggravation.
Southern University continues to add options that make registration less stressful, but students who don’t take advantage of these options properly continue to suffer.
Students have the ability to participate in early registration, telephone registration (JAGCALL), or online registration (JAGNET).
“I encourage students to use JAGNET and mail in billing statements,” said Marvin L. Allen, Registrar. “If students handle their business properly they won’t have to come to school until the first day of class.”
Taking advantage of early registration allows a student to get first pick of classes and pay fees before the official process begins.
“All of my classes were closed because there was not enough students but these classes are still listed in the schedule book,” said Danette Brown, secondary education social studies major. “I felt very discouraged and misled.” “Paying my fees was a breeze, but the scheduling of classes needs more work than the actual registration process.”
If a student misses the fee deadline for early registration the schedule is kicked out of the system and the entire registration process must be repeated.
JAGCALL was available November 5 to December 5, 2001 for students to register classes for the spring semester of 2002.
Beginning freshman registered January 7-8, 2002 and upperclassmen, transfers, and graduate students registered January 9-12, 2002.
According to the Office of the Registrar, by the first day of class, January 14, 2002, 7,396 students were enrolled. By the following week, January 23, 2002 8,210 were enrolled, of these students 366 are law students.
The deadline for adding courses and paying fees was January 24, 2002.
“This semester registration was great. I had no problems and I hope this service continues for semesters to come, it would definitely crack down on the negativity Southern receives about registration,” said Basheba Sam a junior rehabilitation services major.
After registration is complete students should be prepared for the long lines that lead to their refund check.
