Loving yourself, your neighbors, and God were the words that Yolanda King, daughter of slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. used as a text as she addressed 423 Fall 2001 graduates on Saturday December 15.
An actress and lecturer, King reflected on her father’s ministry and the way he encouraged people to love themselves and to develop their God-given talents.
“You should not get wrapped up in material things like fancy cars and brand-named clothes,” said King. “If you don’t have the right stuff on the inside, it doesn’t matter what you surround yourself with.”
King also told grads that self-esteem is the key to perseverance and success.
“Failure is not the falling down, it’s the staying down,” she said.
University officials awarded her father posthumously an honorary doctorate in public policy.
Brandy Tyson of Baton Rouge, whose 3.95 grade point average was the highest in the class, served as chief student marshal for the fall commencement.
A 1997 Tara High graduate, Tyson received a bachelor’s degree in computer science.
