The new semester brings many things to mind…getting the right books, the right wardrobe and the right room décor. The latter may seem of little importance at first glance, but it is quite the contrary.
One’s private space is very important. It should be a place for reflection, rest and relaxation. A college student’s ideal space should include this as well as a place for studying. Decorating that space in style is a start for that model atmosphere.
How can one keep that room in style? Don’t know where to start? Let’s start by talking color. This season, blue is proving to reign over the kingdom of bedrooms. This is a popular color because it is linked to tranquility. Cranberry and forest green are also in the running. These two classic colors seem to never go out of style.
Neutral colors are popular because they are easy to put together and can accessorize easily, according to Sharon Broaden, assistant merchandiser of the bedding department at JC Penny at Cortana Mall. “Males are tend to buy mostly navy and black, while the ladies choose burgundy and other dark colors.” On the other hand, some students prefer citrus colors such as lime, orange, hot pink and yellow.
Now that colors have been chosen, the next step is to decide on a print. One would think flowers would be widely popular. While they still sell a good amount, other types of prints, like stripes and geometrical shapes, sell more, says Sheila Hebert, a bedding sales associate at JC Penny.
Next, it’s time to accessorize. How about a complimentary chair or blow up furniture? Unique lamps are also popular. Lamps are great, especially, if one has a roommate and light is needed for only one person. No carpet? No problem. Room size rugs are available at almost every department and retail store. Wal-Mart has a wide variety to fit your mood and budget. Get some nice curtains or change the blind color in the room, if permissible.
Still not drawing a clear picture for that space? Try choosing a theme and just flow with it. According to Glenna Morton, of askjeeves.com, among the most popular themes among college students are:
Celestial, clouds, moon and stars, sun, astronomy
Citified sleek, trendy, neon
Designer (Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, DKNY, etc.)
Fantasy (feathers, gauzy fabrics, glitter stars)
If these themes just don’t do it, come up with your own theme. Be true to yourself. Are athletics of interest? Go with your favorite team, sport or different type of memorabilia. Are the arts of interest? Adorn the walls with old movie and theatre posters, your favorite artist or blown-up, colorful copies of your favorite poems.
However you decide to decorate your space, remember to be yourself. Make it true to you and your personality. How else can you be comfortable? Also, remember to work with your roommate, if you have one. Make sure you two are on the same page. How great can a room look if only half of it is done in style? With that being said, here’s hoping these tips help you make your space special and in style.
