The Southern University Jaguars Volleyball team (1-0) opened the season last Tuesday with an impressive 3-0 win over the Lady Golden Lions of the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff (2-1)
SU pulled out the win in front of 250 fans by beating UAPB in three straight sets 30-24,30-25, and 30-19.
“We did not do as well. There was very poor passing and defense,” said Coach Nathaniel Denu. “We need to work on our concentration and focus more.”
Both teams worked hard, however, the Lady Jags outplayed the Lady Golden Lions with 33 kills to 26.
“It was exciting being able to play with the team all together. Now I see that I need to work on my quickness and defense,” said Maya Valerie.
Valerie played all three sets and led the team with eight kills. Following with six kills was Tremece Simmons. Seniors Kashanna Bridges and Mayumi Takeuchi played hard with a total of eight kills.
“We played well for the first game, but there is still room for improvement,” said Kashanna Bridges.
In the first set, SU came out smoking, letting UAPB get in only seven kills. In the second set, UAPB tried to make a come back trying the game 19-19 in the third set. However, Southern went on to end the game with three straight sets.
The Lady Jags will play their next game against Texas Southern University September 17, 2001 in Seymour Gym at 7:30 p.m.
