Former Student Government Association President Avery Wilson was elected the president of the National Alliance of Black Student Government Associations (NABSGA) in May.
“I am extremely excited at an opportunity that affects more than just my beloved institution, but one that can overwhelmingly make a difference at any black college in the country,” said Wilson.
Of the 30 Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Equal Opportunity Education Institutions present at the National Association of Student Affairs Professionals (NASAP) Student Leadership Institute, Wilson won by 90 percent of the votes to become the first student from Southern University to win the national presidency.
The organization’s primary goal is to serve and aid student associations with local, state, or national issues that affect their respective institutions.
According to Wilson, some of the organizations major goals including uniting all 118 black colleges by membership, and strengthening internal weaknesses that plague black institutions.
“As having served as an SGA president, I feel that I am more than capable of networking with all HBCU/EOEI student leaders in their quests to have a successful year,” said Wilson.
Wilson, a senior political science major is a native of Baton Rouge and is a fourth-year member of the nationally ranked Southern University cheerleading squad. He is also a choreographer of the SU Look Dancers, president of the Student Business and Industry alliance, and a member of the Pi Sigma Alpha Honor’s Society.
