The new fall lineup is right around the corner and surprsingly, “we” are on the tube on several channels besides UPN. Several of the new series that actually exhibit promise are Cedric the Entertainer Presents on the Fox network and ABC’s Hidden Hills, starring Dondre Whitfield, formerly of Between Brothers (UPN) and the popular ABC soap opera All My Children.
The two series conjuring up the most news are also returning series. Damon Wayans’ My Wife and Kids, which is aired on ABC is reportedly going into the same time slot as Fox’s The Bernie Mac Show.
The small screen gods have been smiling down on the two shows during the past few seasons. They are currently the only two African-American comedies keeping a mainstream audience. They are set to be aired during the coveted 8 o’clock Wednesday night slot.
In interviews about this “strategy”, Wayan’s expressed concern that the networks are pitting the two shows against each other. On the other hand, Mac sees it as “just business.” ABC denied that it was anything but. Makes you go hmm….doesn’t it?
Some people may think that Wayans is insecure about his show. Is Wayan’s just seeing things? Not in the least. I see it your way, my brother. It’s been too long since African Americans have had a “watchworthy” show on the small screen. This move by these two “top” networks causes me to wonder if there is only room at the top for one top rated Black show.
Is it a conspiracy? Once again, “hmmm.”
Well, at least we don’t have another Homeboys From Outer Space.
At least not yet…
Peace.
