From Fort Pierce, Fla. to “The Yard” hails Dean of Student Life Robert J. Bennett.
As dean, Bennett is responsible overall for the code of conduct the students here at Southern should live by. He is also partly responsible for the welfare and quality of life of the students.
Bennett stated that in the past,, there used to be a Dean of Women and a Dean of Men, but then they were combined.
“Having to call a parent and notifying they that their child has died is the hardest part of my job”, noted Bennett. “But the most rewarding part is when a student has a problem with the code of conduct and is ‘high risk’, then goes on to walk across that stage to graduate.”
Bennett, 57, He has three children who have graduated from Southern: Yolanda (Summa cum laude); Irving (former SU quarterback), and Derek. His grandson and nephew are now attending Southern as freshmen.
Bennett has also a prolific sports history here at Southern. His accomplishments as a quarterback for the Jaguars and captain of the football team in 1969 got him inducted into the Southern University Sports Hall of Fame.
He also served as an assistant head coach for ten years. Last, but not least, he is a member of the St. Lucie (Florida) Sports Hall of Fame.
