For students who would like to continue their education, but don’t have the means to come to campus for necessary courses, there are other options. One of those options is Southern’s Distance Education Program.
Hilton J. LaSalle, III is the man to look to for ensuring and coordinating this program that allows students to participate in the same quality courses offered on campus or from any other campus worldwide. The Distance Education Program includes participation from all 48 contiguous United States, Hawaii and various countries abroad.
Currently students are offered courses leading towards bachelor or master’s degrees, or courses needed for certification programs. Last spring, the program had an enrollment of 213 students, a dramatic increase since 1998, when the program only had an enrollment of 27 students. A productive transformation in which LaSalle has played an intricate part.
“My goal is to eventually provide students the option of the availability to take courses anywhere and anytime, ” says LaSalle.
In 1995, the Marrero native received his bachelor’s degree in electronic engineering. After working in Houston and Chicago, LaSalle decided to return home to Louisiana to obtain his master’s in mental health counseling.
“I wanted to return back to Louisiana to further my education and be closer to home. Southern was the perfect choice.” He noted that his master’s degree gives him that educational and administrative edge that he needs.
‘”My Southern experience has definitely been a blessing,” said LaSalle. “With the cutting edge of technology, it has provided me an outstanding professional opportunity.”
