BIRMINGHAM, ALA – Willie Jeffries, recently retired head football coach of South Carolina State University, is set to be the luncheon speaker at the Southwestern Athletic Conference Football Media Day on Friday August 2, 2002 in Birmingham, AL.
Jeffries, a native of Union, SC, retired from his alma mater this past season after two stints totaling 19 seasons, and was the winningest head coach in SCSU history with 128 career wins. He was also the first black head coach of a NCAA Division 1-A program at Wichita State and won five
Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championships and two black college National Championships at Howard University and South Carolina State. In addition, Jeffries sent a number of players into the NFL including Donnie Shell, Harry Carson, Robert Porcher, Orlando “Zeus” Brown, Chartric Darby, Dexter Clinkscale, Jumpy Geathers and Anthony Cook .
In May, Coach Jeffries was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2002 Black Coaches Association (BCA) Convention Awards Banquet and was featured this past February on ESPN’s “SportsCentury” as part of “Black History Month.
The luncheon held at the Harbert Center, in downtown Birmingham, will be part of the day’s activities surrounding the kickoff of the 2002
Southwestern Athletic Conference football season. Those activities will include a morning press conference with the SWAC football coaches, the luncheon and afternoon one-on-one sessions with each school’s coaches and selected players. The 2002 SWAC preseason teams and predicted order of finish will be announced during the event.
