All right all you Southern University fans; it’s that time of year again…HOMECOMING!
SU’s homecoming football game is tomorrow and I am sure everyone has participated in one or more events leading up to the big game.
Homecoming is the time that SU becomes packed with families & friends, students and lasts but not least, alumni.
When I was much younger, I always knew Homecoming was the time in which “out of town family” came to visit. It wasn’t until I became a student at SU that I realized why they were celebrating. Graduating is more than just completing college, but a great achievement of success and for that reason, Homecoming is a celebration for alumni.
Just like a child who has strayed away from home, every year alumni cling to Southern, like a child clings to their long lost mother.
SU is more than just a university to its alumni, it is a nurturing ground where life long friendships were started and strong relationships were formed. Many alumni encourage others to attend SU and make contributions to the university.
With the parades, concerts, pep rallies, Greek shows and talent competitions, I feel as if some students lose sight or don’t care to know, the true meaning of homecoming.
A large number of students focus more on the game, rather than looking forward to taking part in this event.
As students and future alumni, we should give thanks to the university and look forward to the day we can come back to celebrate the life Southern has helped us attain.
