The Southern University Lady Jaguars finished second to Hampton University in the South Carolina State Tournament.
Mayumi Takeuchi, this week’s Southwestern Athletic Conference Player of the Week, hit 25-60 leading the Lady Jaguars (8-3 overall, 4-0 SWAC) to second place finish. The Lady Jaguars defeated Hampton and Clark Atlanta University on Friday and beat Morris Brown twice before losing to Hampton on Saturday.
“We played well enough to win the tournament, but we must work on our defense,” said Coach Nathaniel Denu.
Kashanna Bridges, the 5-11 middle blocker from Baton Rouge, finished with 20 kills followed by Portia Thomas and Maya Valerie with 19.
The Lady Jags volleyball team dropped a close game to Dillard University (16-8).
After winning the first two sets the lady Jags dropped the final three 30-22, 30-24, 16-30, 23-30, 15-13.
The Lady Jags won the first two matches by attacking the net. The team accumulated 18 kills in the first game with only 5 errors and 17 kills in the second with a .277 kill percentage. The offense tripped up as they lost the next three games as they averaged only 8.6 kills.
It was Dillard’s defense that led them to victory, as a team they had 84 total digs to 65 from the Jaguars.
Leading the Lady Jags in kills was seniors Kashanna Bridges, a 5-11 middle blocker from Baton Rouge, who had 12 and Stephanie Wright, a 5-10 outside hitter from Houston with 11.
