The Southern University bowling team participated in their first tournament in Houston, where they were able to get their season off to a great start.
After a slow start in the tourney, Head Coach Karen Couvillion gave her squad reasoning in winning.
“After lunch, I gave them a pep talk and they came back playing spectacular.”
During the first day of the tourney, the women finished sixth place and returned after lunch to make a tremendous move up to second place behind West Texas University.
All-Tournament teams were picked from day one and junior Lyndsey Stewart was picked placing fourth overall.
One the second day of the tournament, 16-baker games were played with modified single elimination with the number one and two-seeded teams setting out until only two other teams were left to play. The final games played were West Texas beating Grambling State University and Southern defeating the University of Houston.
“The team was spectacular. This is the best I have ever seen Southern play. Everyone of them looked so experienced and talented on the lanes,” said Coach Couvillon.
West Texas and Southern were the last two teams standing and it would be the best of three games out of five. Southern won the first game, while West Texas captured the second, and then Southern won the third game, and West Texas won the fourth and broke the tie as they beat a very tough Jaguar team in the fifth game.
The team’s next competition will be October 26, against the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff in Pine Bluff, Ark.
