The Mississippi Valley State University Delta Devils (2-3 overall, 0-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference) will try to extend the Southern University Jaguars’ (1-5 overall, 1-2 SWAC) football team’s losing streak to four Saturday, October 12.
Southern is in the midst of facing its first losing season under the tutelage of Coach Pete Richardson and will be against a Mississippi Valley team that has a new attitude under new coach Willie “The Satellite” Totten.
Last season, the Devils finished a paltry 0-11 overall and 0-7 in the SWAC. They have already come up from such an abysmal beginning, as they have already won two games.
Instrumental in the Delta Devil resurgence is senior quarterback Cary Weaver. In last Saturday’s 52-16 homecoming win over Paul Quinn, Weaver completed 21 of 31 passes for five touchdowns and 315 yards.
The Jaguars are continuing to have woes offensively and defensively. Plagued by injuries, the Jags are struggling to find a spark in the team that will get them going.
“I think that when you look at it from the aspects of inexperience and injuries, that has a lot to do with the inconsistencies on both sides of the football,” said Pete Richardson, Jaguars head coach.
After a disappointing 27-11 loss last Saturday to Alabama A&M, the Jags have work to do for this week’s homecoming match-up.
“We owe this to some individuals who have been here three or four years, and I’m quite sure that our team is going to play well,” said Richardson.
In reference to the abundance of criticism of the Jaguar Nation on the performance of this season’s team, Richardson understands that it is all just part of the game.
“My situation on it is this: anytime you pay 15 or $20 for a football game, you are entitled to your opinion.”
How is the team handling things? Richardson says that the team understands all too well what is going on.
“The mental attitude on the team is good. They understand that we are going to struggle because of the inexperience and injuries…They have a lot pride too, because they want to win…” said Richardson. “…The bar has been set at Southern University. We’re expected to play well, so it’s been tough for them (players).”
