A live band serenades the audience to old and new hits, then the lights darken and the crowd silences, almost as awaiting the unexpected to happen.
Dancers wearing bright colored-feathered boas perform to a catchy theme song from a popular television show. The comedian then welcomes the audience to this amateur talent showcase and cracks a joke, to start the festivities.
As figured out, this describes none other than the famous television program “It’s Showtime at the Apollo.” This long-running program has been a prototype showcasing amateur talent for years.
During Homecoming Week, Southern University’s SGA coordinated a similar event allowing students to “strut their stuff” for the Jaguar Nation, all in the spirit of the historical Apollo “Amateur Night”.
Seymour Gymnasium held over 700 spectators and many talented competitors during the event, held October 9th. The night held many surprises, which made it an event worth attending.
“Before this event the sophomore class issued applications, which led to the interviewing process, for those talented individuals,” said Avery Wilson, a coordinator for the event.
With seven groups and individuals set to performing, the talent show showcased some of most talented people SU had to offer.
The performers were mostly vocalists and only one was run off the stage, by an infamous “Sandman” imitator.
During the two intermissions, rap groups from Fearless and Bloodtight Records entertained the audience, respectively.
The audience appeared to lack interest until T-shirts and money were thrown, which ignited a small riot.
The show ended with performances by New Orleans rap artist “Hot Boy Ronald” and the “Imitators,” the group who won the talent showcase competition.
