In the October 7 issue of Sports Illustrated, there was a special report ranking of all 324 Division-I colleges in the category of athletic programs.
The University of Texas and Stanford University were practically tied for first place in the ranking, followed by Oklahoma, Florida and South Carolina.
In the state, LSU and Tulane ranked sixth and 90th, respectively.
Low and behold, the good ole’ Blue and Gold ranked 136th out of the whole bunch! That’s right! We ranked 136th and we ranked higher than any other HBCU. Florida A&M (179) and Hampton (182) were ranked next.
Maybe next year we will get a higher ranking.
In lieu of all of the Jaguar Nation’s moans and aches over the dismal season of the football team and the lackluster of our volleyball team, there is still something we can cheer about.
As mentioned in the magazine, the Jags won SWAC titles in seven sports. SEVEN SPORTS!!! Who cares if it isn’t football? We have a nationally recognized athletic program and damnit, we’ve done good!
We have a baseball team that rivals with other Div-I schools-thanks Coach Cador.
We have a hell of a women’s basketball team. Kudos to you, Coach Pugh. Let’s see how many of you will go to see her squad practice on Monday.
The track and field teams run off with a championship practically every year and don’t forget about that tennis squad. The other squads may be mediocre right now, but they do keep us in the hunt.
We may have our qualms about the administration and the athletic department and also the validity of their motives of their actions, but you have got to admit-win or lose, Southern University is definitely worth cheering about.
