Homecoming 2002 joined the ranks of the hundreds before it in being one of the best times of the year for the Jaguar Nation. The events leading up to the big game for that week were enjoyed by all. The standout of the week was the annual homecoming concert.
The stars shone brightly across Baton Rouge as special guests Rickey Smiley, Ruff Endz, Trina and Ludacris took the stage at the Baton Rouge Centroplex. The location was changed this year from the F.G. Clark Activity Center (Minidome) because of renovations being done to the on-campus site.
Many preparations were made for the event, including busing for those students who had no transportation to the venue or ticket office. The community and sponsors were very much involved in this and others worked for the program.
“It took the help of the entire Jaguar Nation, not just the students. We didn’t put this on ourselves,” said Makela Stewart, executive assistant to the SGA president.
Rickey Smiley, of Comic View fame had the audience in stitches the entire night with his down-home flavor of comedy. Smiley was added to the show at the last minute to replace scheduled emcee, Mike Epps (Next Friday).
“He (Epps) pulled out not even 24 hours before the concert,” said Stewart. “It was no problem getting Smiley on such short notice. His management was great. In about two hours it was a done deal,” said Stewart.
“I have always wanted to come to Southern,” said Smiley. “It is one of the only HBCUs I haven’t performed at.”
First on the musical ticket were R&B crooners Ruff Endz. After they serenaded the ladies with hits such as “Someone to Love You,” local artist Choppa hyped up the crowd.
Next, Trina laced the stage with hip-hop beats fit for a “Diamond Princess.”
Ludacris came to the front with his special blend of southern hospitality and lyrical manipulation. He was sure to add “225” to his list of “Area Codes” for the evening. His energetic show closed the star-studded event.
The event was clearly enjoyed by students and supporters.
“This was one of the best concerts I’ve seen here thus far. Overall, it was a great turnout,” said Stewart.
