The Southern University football team (3-6 overall, 3-2 Southwest Athletic Conference) fell to the Alcorn State Braves (6-2 overall, 3-1 SWAC) 22-20, in front of18, 957 spectators at A. W. Mumford Stadium.
With 22 seconds left in the game, abandonment from a successful running game in Southern’s last offensive drive, caused an anticipated passing attack to become foiled by the Braves.
“Well we had to try to control the clock, and get the ball down the field to make some plays for good field position, but couldn’t adapt,” said head coach Pete Richardson.
Southern resurfaced from a 16-point deficit to catch up to Alcorn State to bring the game within two points, and that is where the Braves left them at the end of regulation.
“…You can’t wait until the fourth quarter to play a game…,” said senior linebacker Chris Cooper. “You have to come out …in the first quarter and we didn’t do that tonight.”
Southern has to lose just one more game in order to introduce Richardson to his first losing season at Southern. Although it seems to be the inevitable, with the up-and-down play of the Jags, the players are not ready to concede just yet.
Preventive maintenance from a losing season is necessary as the Jags have only three more games left in their season. Their next match-up is to be against Miles College at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
