Enchanting Fall Beauty was the theme for this year’s Association of Women Students (AWS) Beauty Fair. Held Monday from 5-8 p.m. on November 11, the event provided Southern University students with a chance to get their hair styled, cut and even braided. Participants could also get facials and hand Paraffin waxes at the third annual event held in the Cotillion Ballroom in the Smith Brown Memorial Union.
According to Mabel Cook, AWS public relations/events chair, the beauty fair was an idea conceived by past AWS officers who were trying to come up with an event that would hold the women of Southern University in high esteem. They knew that many students coming to Southern University had a little uneasiness about dorm stylists. Therefore the beauty fair provided an opportunity to display the professional talent in Baton Rouge and hopefully students could find a constant beautician. “They felt the women of Southern University needed a day of beautification,” said Cook.
In the make-up category, the participants consisted of Cynthia Hampton and Patty Hemmings from Beauty on the Go-Color Me Beautiful that showcased the Flora Roberts makeup line. Shondra Robison, Chrisola Webb, Courtney White and Michelle Jesse provided Mary Kay facials. Toni Frazier, a nail technician from Paris Parker smoothed hands with her special waxes. Aaron Richard from Dirty South Salon had all the ladies’ eyebrows looking neat and uniformed. Other vendors included Krazy Kuts who provided the men with haircuts, Heavenly Creations Hair Designs, Pro Cuts Hair Salon, Vanessa & Co. and Personal Preference.
All participants were contacted by Cook a month ago and were asked to participate along with letting them know the guidelines and procedures.
“I heard it was something on the yard and I felt anything I could do to help, I would,” said Cardell Bell, a barber with Krazy Kuts.
Vanessa Spencer, owner of Vanessa and Co., was also willing to participate. She had previously participated in the Essence Beauty Fair, SU Homecoming Parade and many SGA activities and was excited about participating in the beauty fair. “I have two kids who went to Southern and many Southern clients,” said Spencer.
Courtney White, a Mary Kay consultant said she felt it was a good opportunity to showcase Mary Kay since it is something she respects, “being that it represents God first, family second, and career third.”
Many of the pleased customers from the beauty fair included Justin Patterson who got his hair braided by Pamelyn Underwood from Heavenly Creations Hair Design. Tonya Sanders, who walked away with a new hairstyle, said that Sharon Cottman from Pro Cuts Hair Salon made her feel confident about her hair and gave her good tips.
“I have already made an appointment for the future,” said Sanders enthusiastically.
The event, which was free to students, was clearly enjoyed by all in attendance.
