The Southern University men and women’s golf teams’ season is off to a great start with three invitational golf tournaments under their belt.
“We are working very hard and looking forward to making a better showing at the SWAC (Southwestern Athletic Conference) Championships,” said Marie Ferdinand, assistant golf coach.
The Jaguars competed in the Louisiana SWAC Tiger Invitational Golf Tournament October 6-8 in Shreveport, hosted by Grambling State University. This was their first tournament of the season. The women placed first in the two-day tournament with a team score of 641 and the men placed second. The women’s low medalist of the tournament was junior Cassie Jemison with a two-day score of 155.
On October 16-18, the team competed in the Alabama State University Hornets Invitational. The women continued their success placing first with the score of 648. Freshman Josephine Ainley was the low medalist with a total score of 160. The men placed fourth with a total score of 635.
On October 21-23, in Natchez, Miss., the team competed in the Alcorn State University Invitational Tournament. Once again, the women placed first with the first day low score of 286, which is a record low score for Southern University. Cassie Jamison was the low medallist with a total score of 139. The men place second with the team score of 610. Southern’s Brian Joroge was the low medalist with a total score of 140 and Peter Ndungu was the all-tournament player with a score of 146.
The Jaguars next competition will be November 3-5 in Pine-Bluff, Ark. for the University of Arkansas Pine-Bluff Invitational.
