Sighting an Southern University Police Department patrol car at the rear of the campus late at night is the norm, but lately the East Baton Rouge Sheriff Department’s patrol cars have been seen all over campus.
“They have been here over a year now,” said Dale Flowers, chief of the Southern University police department.
According to Flowers, . Marilyn Hill, director of housing wanted to increase security at and around the dormitories.
Flowers explained that as a result of his staff being shorthanded the help of the Sheriff’s Department was called upon.
“It wasn’t a result of any rise in crime on campus,” said Flowers.
Flowers said crime on campus has not made any drastic change but that he believes the presence of police may discourage possible offenders.
“The officers are put whereever they are needed,” said Flowers.
Flowers stated that Cpl. David Senegal assigns each officer to his patrol area during the hours of 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
“Once they were brought in a decrease in crime began,” said Cpl. Albert McNeely.
McNeely is in charge of keeping records and statistics for the SUPD.
During the semester of 2001 there were 25 burglaries, 111 damaged property reports and 90 thefts reported.
According to McNeely, Jones Hall and Satterwhite Hall receives the most attention from campus law enforcement.
McNeely said, most of the incidents of theft are a result of careless students leaving their doors unlocked.
