Southern University’s standout guard Jacklyn Winfield scored her 1000th career point as a Jaguar in a 68-61 victory over Jackson State on Monday, in Jackson, Mississippi.
Coming into Saturday night’s game against the Lady Tigers of Grambling State University Winfield needed 33 points to reach this prestigious milestone. Winfield reached her 1000th point in the same fashion as NBA superstar Michael Jordan reached his 30,000th career point, hitting two shots from the free throw line.
The two free throws could not have come at a better time, aiding the Jaguars in fighting off Jackson State University in the closing seconds of Monday’s narrow win.
Winfield scored her 1000th point with 44 seconds remaining on the game clock.
The fiery leader of the women’s basketball is currently the leading scorer in the SWAC, with 21.4 points per game. She has scored 30 or more points twice this season, with a 32-point performance against GSU on January 2, before garnering 31-points against Alabama A&M on January 19.
Playing in only her 49th game as a Jaguar, Winfield became the fastest player to reach 1,000 points in Southern University history since 1975. The Meridian Community College transfer from Wesson, Miss. has started in 45 of 49 games under second year head coach Sandy Pugh.
Southern’s last two players to reach with the 1,000 point plateau were guard LaKeysha Johnson with 1,165 points in four years of play and Kim Hollins, a forward who ended her collegiate career with 1331 points.
Sandy Pugh and her team of Jaguars will look to continue to add to their many accolades this Saturday, as their 14-game winning streak and unbeaten SWAC record will be tested against University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Beginning with UAPB, the remaining two home contests for the Jaguars will be held in F.G. Clark Activity Center while the last two will be held in Seymour Gymnasium. Tip-off time is still set for 5:30 p.m., with the men’s game immediately following.
