For the Southern University men’s basketball team this season has been one to forget. The Jaguars (4-16, 3-8) have suffered defeat after defeat this season and have experienced the lowest of lows in Jaguar basketball. Whether it’s the embarrassment of losing to a Division II school or having a freshman miss two NBA range 3-pointers in the final 10 seconds of a one point loss.
For a team that has to deal with being booed and ridiculed in their home stadium, a recent road trip may be the reason why the Jaguar’s spirits may be rising. The Jaguars have won two of their last three games on the road. On Monday, February 5 in front a crowd of over 2100 fans the Jaguars defeated the Jackson State University Tigers (5-15, 4-7) 91-81.
Leading the Jags in to victory was Victor Tarver who scored 17 points dished off 9 assists and had 3 steals. Carl Alexander also scored 17 points with 6 rebounds. The Jaguars shot unusually well from the field hitting 59.6 percent of their field goals and 36 percent from behind the 3-point line. The bench came up big for the Jags with Tim Johnson scoring 14 points with six points and four assists. Brian Johnson also stepped off the bench to drop in 13 points.
Another vital part of the win for Southern was the same freshman that may have caused them the game against Grambling State University. Trayvean Scott, who sat the bench for the final 13 minutes of the first half, locked on great defense on JSU’s leading scorer Tim Henderson. Henderson, who went 5-for-six from 3-point range with 17 points in the first half, finished the game 5-for-10 from the field with 19 points.
The Jaguars next host the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff (2-19, 2-8) Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the F.G. Clark Activity Center.
