When you think of Mardi Gras, one tends to think of parades, beads, doubloons, and even the free coconuts that’s handed out by the “Krewe of Zulu.” We all want something for free during this time–I know that I do. But sometimes we don’t know how much all of this may cost; after all, nothing is free in life.
Look at it like this: Right now it may be free to us, but, if we were residing in New Orleans we probably would want to be a part of special social aid organizations called “krewes” to help boost our social status as adults. Now with just about anything, it has a cost or membership fee.
We spend hundreds of dollars on outfits for Mardi Gras, but would you spend the same amount of money for a membership into a krewe? Would we like to help out for the betterment of mankind or would you like to look good and show off your outfit and risk it getting dirty in the French Quarter? I would like to think that joining a krewe to aid your community supercedes going to Mardi Gras just to look at the drunkards and ‘topless.’
But, think about all of the money that comes into the city of New Orleans for the couple of weeks before “Fat Tuesday.” According to a study performed by the University of New Orleans, over 500 million dollars comes into New Orleans during carnival season from the parades and balls.
