The Lady Hornets of Alabama State University did what many thought was impossible…beat Southern head coach Sandy Pugh and her team of Jaguars.
Monday, February 18 in Montgomery, Ala., the Jaguars were defeated by the ladies of Alabama State 66-65 in the Joe L. Reed Acadome.
A last-second shot by ASU’s Jawanda West pushed the Lady Hornets ahead of the Jaguars.
“When you’re on the road, and you have a 15-point lead going down the stretch and then you allow the momentum to swing and then you make the turnovers, you just can’t do that,” said Pugh.
The Jaguars (20-4, 14-1 SWAC) led by ten points with little more than two minutes left to play, but missed three of six free throws in the last 1:56. Southern also turned the ball over three times, including a loss of possession on a jump ball.
A backcourt traveling violation called on Tommie Walden, set up West’s game winning shot.
“We couldn’t stop West in the last minutes of the game,” said Pugh. “They just wanted it a little more than we did.”
Shameka Jackson had 26 points and seven rebounds, while Chrishutta Lewis added 12 points and seven assists for the Lady Hornets.
Jacklyn Winnfield, who went 0-for-4 in the first half had 17 points in the second half, also produce seven turnovers. The Jaguars finished the night with 25 turnovers. Also assisting in the loss was Tommie Walden, who missed all eleven of her shots.
“Just mental errors from our guards who have played Georgia Tech and been in some of our biggest games all year, and we make mental errors down the stretch,” Pugh said.
Tremesha Colbert added eleven points and 14 rebounds to the effort. Cherise Sims also added eleven points.
The Jaguars have now cut their lead over the rest of the SWAC down to two games, with three games to play, including two home games left in the season.
The Jaguars will forge to face the Lady Braves of Alcorn State University Saturday, February 23, at 5:30 p.m. before returning home to Seymour Gym to face the Lady Panthers of Prairie View A&M University.
