During last week’s “Enough is Enough” SGA Forum visitation rights were passionately debated between students and administrators.
Currently visitation is only permitted on certain weekends.
“My main concern to open visitation is the threat of young ladies being raped,” said Robert Bennett, director of student life.
The argument is often made that larger universities have visitation on a daily basis.
“Larger universities with these type of visitation policies tend to have a high rate of rape victims,” said Bennett.
According to Bennett, the purpose of visitation being allowed during weekends when away games are occurring is a result of the calm atmosphere the campus has during that time.
“During home games so many people are here on campus until its chaotic,” said Bennett.
Bennett stated that he hopes in the future to see co-ed dormitories here at Southern.
“I feel the current student body we have here at Southern isn’t ready for that,” said Bennett.
Bennett also stated that the student body is going through a transformation as a result of new admission standards and that the current visitation policy could become a thing of the past.
However, there is documentation proving that unauthorized visitation takes place here at Southern University on a regular basis.
According to Corporal Albert McNeely of the Southern University police department, there were 64 unauthorized visitations reported last semester.
“I personally witnessed a young lady entering Bradford Hall on the eastside as I was leaving work one evening,” said Bennett.
The current university policy clearly states that visitation is only permitted on weekends designated by the university.
