Once again, Southern University’s guard Jacklyn Winfield has been named the Southwestern Athletic Conference’s Player of the Week. This time she is joined by the men’s freshman forward from Lake Charles, Nicholas Egland.
In last week’s wins over Mississippi Valley State University and Alabama A&M University, Egland averaged 25.5 points, 12.5 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and 1.5 steals.
In the contest against MVSU, Egland had 29 points with 12 rebounds, before leading the Jaguars to victory over the Bulldogs. Egland had 22 points, grabbing 13 rebounds.
Winfield, the 5-foot-8 Wesson, Miss. native also led the women to victories over MVSU and Alabama A&M. Winfield came out of last week’s contests averaging 29.5 points, two rebounds, 4.5 assists and three steals.
Winfield is currently ranked tenth in scoring and 15th in steals in Division I basketball with 21.9 points per game and 3.5 steals per game.
Also representing the SWAC in Division I standings are Victor Tarver 21st in the nation in assists averaging 6.1 per game. Latesha Lee of Jackson State University, who leads the division in steals with 4.8 per game.
Grambling State University’s Shirieka Evans averages 4.7 steals per game placing her in the number two spot.
Also ranked in scoring is Alabama State’s Shameka Evans in 11th place with 21.5 points per game.
Also in SWAC news is the current three-way tie for the sixth, seventh and eighth spots in conference standings, amongst Alabama A&M, Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern.
Only the top eight teams in the conference are eligible for the SWAC tournament. University of Arkansas – Pine Bluff currently hold the tenth place spot, with Southern at number nine.
