The Smith-Brown Memorial Union was broken into early Saturday morning on January 26, 2002.
Henry Matthews, 23, a resident of 2375 79th Ave, in Banks, a non-student of Southern University was taken into custody by Southern University Police after a custodian found him on the premises allegedly attempting to break into the candy store.
Matthews was charged with simple battery, unauthorized entry, and simple damage to property and threatening a police officer. Officer Scotty Tull, Lieutenant Wilson Winfrey and Constable Alvin Jackson of the Southern University Police Department placed him under arrest.
A janitor on duty observed Matthews inside the student union after hours of operation. Reportedly the janitor saw the suspect and observed his strange behavior and immediately called the SUPD.
According to police reports, at approximately 12:05 a.m. a call was made to the police station reporting the attempted burglary. They quickly dispersed to the student union to maintain the situation.
The report states that Matthews was seen wearing a white bandana over his face while breaking into the candy store. While being placed under arrest he resisted but was subdued by the officers. As a result of the struggle a glass on the first door near the mailroom was broken.
Matthews was then detained at the police station and refused to cooperate with the officers. Apparently he then threatened physical harm to Lt. Winfrey.
He was locked up on the charges the same night in the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison where he is currently being held.
“There are still ongoing investigations in the case because more charges may be pending,” said Corporal Albert Mcneely.
According to David Quiett, Director of the Smith Brown Memorial Union, this is the second time that the candy store had been broken into.
“We had one custodian securing the building that night and from my understanding after he noticed the suspect he quickly alarmed the police,” said Quiett.
