Be truthful. How many people do you know believe in SGA, the organization designed for the well being of the student body?
Not many of us do. I find myself asking this and similar questions all the time. But why? Could it possibly be because the only time that we acknowledge the SGA’s presence is at Homecoming and Spring Fest? Sadly, this is the reality on our campus.
For example, take the last campus elections; Did you vote for the person who had the purest idea of how things should be on campus, or did you vote for the person who had the most rapid handshake, or the person that could slip you a flyer or t-shirt at the speed of light?
I believe the members of SGA at one time have the proper ideas in mind, but that was before we had elected them, or their friends appointed them to office.
The SGA has turned from the “Voice of the Students” to little more than a social organization designed to highlight resumes. The reason that it is so easy to say that SGA isn’t responsible for doing much for us is because SGA decides not to regularly publicize their “works in process.” Be honest, have you seen anything that was discussed in the recently held “SGA Forum” actually pressed for action?
In all fairness to the SGA, they do have some good ideas on paper that are directed to the development of our campus. Unfortunately, it seems that those ideas are being left on paper for the next SGA cabinet to deal with. This has been the way things have been for years. Don’t get me wrong, I do understand that the SGA is operating under a tight budget, but not everything dealing with the improvement of this university has to involve SGA’s budget.
Why isn’t SGA pushing the administration to speed up the improvement process? If the cabinet pushed the administration for results then they would have to give us some answers or show some actions. I believe that SGA has somewhere down the line forgotten that students power the organization, and if they don’t decide to push the issue and demand results then they will never level the playing field. We have an obligation to push SGA to handle their business, a task that falls heavy on the students to elect the best possible students to represent us. This will prove to be a major part in the equation of future campus improvements.
