>After Saturday evening’s annual Blue and Gold scrimmage game, Quincy Richard, a junior quarterback from Opelousas, has emerged as the leader in the race for quarterback.
“Richard has definitely emerged as the forerunner,” said offensive coordinator, David Oliver.
The annual Blue and Gold, which got off to a late start, was sponsored by the newly formed Jaguar Athletic Group, Inc., who placed attendance at 4,283 persons. Eighty-eight percent of money raised will be turned over to the athletic department.
For the majority of the first half, the defense who donned white jerseys for the event dominated the flow of the game forcing, returning kicker Justin Mattingly to take 12 punt, before Glenn Mangham intercepted an Anthony Fisher pass, running 25 yards for the touchdown.
Offensively in the first half was also marked with several dropped passes by the receiving corps.
With little more than 20 seconds left in the first half, Richard found himself in the endzone for the score off a 20-yard run.
“I know what my job is,” said Richard. “My job is to put us into scoring position.”
Richard finished the night 13-for-22 for 175 yards and 19 carries for 78 yards.
Also making a showing in last weekend’s scrimmage was junior quarterback Kurvis Sharp of Shreveport, an option style player, shined with runs of 40, 31 and 27 yards. He finished 5-for-11 for 20 yards with one interception.
“Whichever one we choose is going to have great foot-speed,” said Oliver.
Sophomore Thomas Ricks, a highly recruited quarterback from Lutcher struggled going 1 for 5, for nine yards and one interception, but showed flashes of his strong arm and athletic ability at times.
“This was a good chance to see all our quarterbacks on the field in a game situation,” said head coach Pete Richardson. “We had to see which one would last and make a difference.”
Also scoring for the Jaguars was Lionel Joseph, with a 17-yard touchdown run, and Chris Davis scored on a fumble recovery.
The Jaguars will wrap up their spring practice sessions Saturday, April 13.
