The Office of Student Life has officially lifted the suspension of the Beta Sigma Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
According to Robert Bennett, director of student life, the members of the Beta Sigma Chapter completed their required community service hours on March 18, 2002. They were placed on probation until the spring of 2003 on Tuesday April 2.
“The did an excellent job of community service and I felt that anyone who displays that amount of service and dedication deserved to be taken off suspension and placed on probation,” said Bennett.
As part of the probationary period they are required to attend a mandatory hazing workshop on April 8 and must submit the names of all members who attended the meeting as well as the names of those who did not attend to the Offices of Student Life on April 9.
“They are allowed to have a membership intake process this semester if they choose to and they are now able to wear their letters,” said Bennett.
While on probation all fraternity events must be supervised by the graduate chapter or under the direct supervision of the fraternity advisor Willis Jacob. Any reported violations of any rule and expulsion will be recommended.
“It is a privilege for all fraternities and sororities to be on campus and while they are on campus they must abide by the rules and regulations,” said Bennett.
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. was suspended after a student filed claim that he was hazed and also for initiating an illegal intake line in the fall.
