The increasing number of graduates has forced Southern University to implement new procedures for distributing diplomas.
Graduates will no longer receive diplomas during the commencement exercise. Instead, candidates will only receive their diploma covers in which no names will appear.
Diplomas will be issued alphabetically, to qualified candidates immediately following the commencement ceremony from several stations in Seymour Gymnasium.
“Due to the larger graduations, this procedure will make the distribution of diplomas more manageable and it will also pick up the pace of the graduation ceremony,” said Marvin Allen, registrar. “We will be able to distribute diplomas in a more controlled manner.”
In order for a graduate to pick up his diploma, a picture ID and signature is required, verifying that they have received their diploma.
“I think this method is too time consuming, I’ve put in my time at SU and when I walk across the stage I want to be complete,” said Kia Bickham, a graduating senior in mass communications from Baton Rouge.
Distribution stations will be open until 5 p.m. on the day of graduation.
Graduates may also receive their diplomas in the Registrar’s Office
