Spring, time for sun, the beach, and gospel music? While many students are heading home for spring break there are a number of students heading out for spring break events all over the county.
From the Kappa Luau to Gospel Spring Break, this year’s spring break offers a multitude of choices targeting black college students.
Spring Break 2002 offers dozens of different locations and dates spanning throughout March and April.
One of the most popular events is Black Spring Break, taking place three times throughout March and April in two different locations.
This year’s Black Spring Break will be in the Virgin Islands March 11-15 and March 18-22 and New Orleans April 5-7.
Black Spring Break has scheduled its wrap up for 2002 at Jazzland theme park in New Orleans estimating a total100, 000 participates.
The Texas Beach Party, formerly known as the Kappa Beach Party or the Kappa Beach Fest is April 19-22 in Galveston, Texas. According to BlackBeachWeek.com an estimated 200,000 people travel to Galveston each year to over four and a half miles of street parties, vendors, car shows, and concerts.
The Texas Beach Party started by Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. has been in existence for over eighteen years and so has the Black College Reunion.
BCR attracting over 150,000 black college students and alumni from Historically Black Colleges and Universities from over the nation started in 1984.
“I attended the Black College Reunion and it was off the chain. There were girls everywhere and a lot of tight parties,” said Terrance Boyd junior mass communications major from Kansas City, Mo. “It is an event that all college students should attend.
The first annual BCR was sponsored by Florida institutions Bethune-Cookman College and Florida A and M University, stated BlackBeachWeek.com.
BCR will be in Daytona Beach, Fla April 12-14.
Another venue for spring break is Freaknik, officially called the Black College Spring Break in Atlanta, Ga. The Black College Spring Break, once the capitol event for spring break has developed from a the usual spring break street parties to the club scene, stated BlackBeachweek.com.
This may make it less attractive to those looking for a twenty-four-hour party scene.
The Black College Spring Break is planned for the same weekend as the Texas Beach Party, April 19-22.
Tallahassee, Fla will offer the annual the Kappa Luau April 19-21. The luau came into existence after the over-commercialization of the Kappa Beach Party stated KappaBeachFest.com.
This year’s spring break will also offer a number of brand new venues focusing on the mature adult.
The first annual Black Vegas is scheduled for April 4-7.Black Vegas, nicknamed, the ultimate urban getaway by BlackVegasUSA.com, features lyrical displays from today’s most popular poets, live jazz performances, and a showcase of comedians seen on BET’s Comicview.
Also the annual Gospel Spring Break or Gospel Fest will be held on March 20-25 in Ocho Rios, Jamaica.
