A former student escaped from the Southern University Police Department last Sunday evening after being arrested for breaking into suites in Jones Hall.
“Reginald McKnight, whose address was not released by SUPD at press time, was charged with simple burglary, criminal damage to property, simple trespassing, felony theft, and escape.
According to Chief of Police Dale Flowers, an officer whose name is being withheld, released McKnight from handcuffs so that he could use the restroom. Once in the restroom, McKnight broke a windowpane and kicked out the screen to escape from William L. Pass Police Station.
“As soon as we discovered that he was missing, we engaged in an extensive two-hour search of the entire campus with the help of the Baton Rouge Police Department,” said Flowers.
According to witnesses, a resident assistant caught McKnight in the room of two students.
“When he was discovered in the room, he had a duffel bag that contained hammers and wrenches in which he used to break doorknobs. He also had stolen merchandise in the bag,” said Flowers.
McKnight was later apprehended and placed in the holding cell at the police station.
“We are working close with BRPD to bring McKnight to justice,” said Flowers.
McKnight was last enrolled in the university in May 2001.
The officer that allowed McKnight to escape is no longer on the force.
